In July 2004, international legislation came into effect that began to directly regulate security in ports and designated port facilities. Shortly afterwards, the European Union endorsed the maritime security regime with it's own laws and regulations. Today, it has become necessary to consider security along the entire length and scope of the supply chain, which has led to the evolution of the International Standard ISO 28001:2007 - Security Management Systems for the Supply Chain.
